Because every meal carries memory, and every culture deserves a seat at the table.
African Village Africain created the African Ethnic Food Bank with one simple yet powerful vision — to ensure that families in our community never have to choose between nourishment and cultural identity. We believe food is more than sustenance; it’s heritage, connection, and belonging.
“When I found plantain and yam at the food bank, I cried. It felt like home again.”
— Miriam, newcomer mother of three
About the Program
Many newcomer and immigrant families rely on food banks to make ends meet — but most food banks offer limited culturally familiar options. The African Ethnic Food Bank bridges that gap by providing African and Caribbean staples that reflect the tastes, traditions, and comfort of home.
From plantains and cassava to millet, palm oil, and smoked fish, we distribute nutritious, culturally relevant foods that respect our community’s diverse roots.
This program is run by volunteers and supported by local donors, markets, and farmers who share our belief that food is love in its most universal language.
How It Works
Who Can Access It:
Open to individuals and families in need within our community.
Priority given to newcomers, seniors, and single-parent households.
No one is turned away — dignity and respect are at the heart of what we do.

Monthly and emergency food hampers with ethnic staples
Fresh produce and seasonal cultural items
Baby formula and household essentials when available
Cooking oil, rice, beans, plantain flour, and more
When & Where:
Food distribution occurs twice a month (first and third Saturdays).

Beyond Food — Building Connection
We go beyond simply handing out groceries. Every food drive day becomes a celebration of community — with shared smiles, greetings in many languages, and the familiar aroma of heritage meals.
We also host:
Cultural cooking classes (learn to prepare traditional dishes with healthy twists)
Nutrition workshops (understanding balanced diets and meal budgeting)
Community potlucks that bring together newcomers and long-time residents
Our Impact
Since the launch of the African Ethnic Food Bank, we’ve:
Served over 500 families across Peel and GTA
Distributed over 30,000 lbs of culturally relevant food
Partnered with local African grocers and community farms
Empowered dozens of volunteers to make a difference in their neighborhoods
Every food package carries hope — and every act of giving strengthens the fabric of our community.
